Cam Lo Pagoda Quang Tri – A Journey to the Ancient Sacred Land

Cam Lo Pagoda is located at 102 Can Vuong Street, Cam Lo Town, Cam Lo District, Quang Tri Province. The pagoda is about 10km from the center of Dong Ha City, situated right next to National Highway 1A and the Ho Chi Minh Highway, making its location extremely convenient for tourists to travel.

• From Dong Ha: Travel by motorbike or car along National Highway 1A heading North for about 15-20 minutes.
• From Hue: About 80-90km, taking 1.5-2 hours of travel.
• From Da Nang: About 160km, you can combine a trip to visit Quang Tri in 1-2 days.

The pagoda is situated beside the Hieu River, with peaceful, lush green surroundings, perfect for those seeking tranquility amidst their travel journey.

Cam Lo Pagoda is one of the representative pagodas of Cam Lo District, Quang Tri Province, closely associated with the spiritual life and history of community formation along the Hieu River. Over decades of development, the pagoda is not only a place of religious activity for Buddhists but also a witness to the historical changes of this land rich in revolutionary tradition. In the early 1940s, when conditions were still difficult, local Buddhists mainly conducted worship at private homes. By 1952, the main pagoda was officially built on a modest scale, marking an important development step in the spiritual life of Cam Lo residents.

The history of Cam Lo Pagoda is also linked with the journey of land reclamation, hamlet establishment, and stabilizing the lives of residents along the Hieu River. Having undergone several relocations to suit practical conditions, the current pagoda is its third construction site, demonstrating the strong bond between the pagoda and the local community across generations. During the fierce war years, the pagoda was not only a spiritual refuge but also contributed to encouraging people to overcome hardships and maintain faith in life. 

An important milestone in the pagoda's development occurred in 2001, when Most Venerable Thich Thien Tan was appointed abbot. With the wish to build a solemn monastery meeting the growing religious needs of Buddhists, the Venerable launched a major renovation effort in 2002. After years of construction, the Dai Hung Bao Dien (Main Sanctuary) was completed and inaugurated in 2006, bringing a spacious and majestic appearance to the pagoda.

Today, Cam Lo Pagoda is not only a familiar spiritual destination for the people of Quang Tri, but is also recognized by the Vietnam Federation of UNESCO Associations as a "Sacred Ancient Pagoda of Vietnam". This title is an affirmation of the unique cultural, historical, and spiritual values that the pagoda has preserved and promoted throughout its formation and development.

Cam Lo Pagoda embodies traditional Vietnamese Buddhist architectural style, harmoniously combining majesty and tranquility. The most impressive highlight of Cam Lo Pagoda is Giac Nhien Stupa – the stupa worshiping the Buddha and Buddha relics, which is the tallest in Vietnam (established by the Vietnam Records Organization on May 21, 2016).

• Total cost: About 15 billion VND, contributed by Buddhists from near and far.

The highest floor (10th floor) worships the Buddha statue and Buddha relics offered by Indian monks in 2014 – this is the most sacred spot, attracting a large number of pilgrims.

• Choose an appropriate time: The ideal time to visit the pagoda is early in the morning or late in the afternoon when the weather is cool and peaceful. If you want to clearly feel the spiritual space of the pagoda, visitors can come during early spring, on the 15th day (full moon) or the 1st day of the lunar month – times when many Buddhists and local people come to worship Buddha and pray for peace.
• Polite attire: When visiting the pagoda, priority should be given to modest, neat clothing suitable for the solemn atmosphere of a monastery.
• Civilized behavior at the pagoda: Visitors need to maintain general hygiene, refrain from making noise, refrain from smoking on the pagoda grounds, and comply with the pagoda's regulations. If you wish to make an offering, you can prepare incense, fresh flowers, fruits, or make a voluntary donation.
• Combine exploring nearby destinations: From Cam Lo Pagoda, visitors can easily combine visits to many other famous landmarks of Quang Tri such as the Tan So Citadel Relic, the Provisional Revolutionary Government Site of the Republic of South Vietnam, or Cam Lo Market Fair – a place preserving many unique traditional cultural features.
