Discovering the Pristine Beauty of Yen Phu Lake - Quang Binh

Yen Phu Lake, also known locally as Hoi Rooc Lake, is located in Trung Hoa Commune, Minh Hoa District, former Quang Binh Province, about 100 km northwest of Dong Hoi City center. Yen Phu Lake was once chosen as a filming location for the Hollywood blockbuster Kong: Skull Island, depicting the deserted, pristine island. In the early morning, Yen Phu Lake boasts a gentle beauty with a thin layer of mist hanging over the water, blending with the early sunlight. Yen Phu Lake is a man-made irrigation reservoir formed in the 1960s, closely tied to local land reclamation and agricultural development. At that time, the Yen Phu Cooperative mobilized local residents to build a dam to block the flow of Nuoc Do Stream – a branch originating from the limestone mountain range – creating a lake area of about 7 hectares. The dam structure, over 30 meters wide, not only stores a stable and clear water source year-round but also serves irrigation for hundreds of hectares of farmland in the region.

Later, the lake was contracted out to local households for management, combining aquaculture and water regulation. Thanks to maintaining its almost intact natural landscape, in 2015, it was selected as a key filming location for the movie Kong: Skull Island. This event created a significant turning point, turning Yen Phu Lake into a featured destination on the former Quang Binh travel map.

From the center of Dong Hoi City, you can travel to Yen Phu Lake by motorbike or car; the distance is about 100 km, taking 2-3 hours depending on traffic conditions. The popular route is along National Highway 12A, passing through Quy Dat Town, and then reaching Trung Hoa Commune. The road has some winding sections, but the natural scenery along the way is beautiful, with mountains, forests, and sprawling meadows.

• Motorbike: Suitable for young people who love backpacking and want the freedom to explore. Remember to check the fuel and vehicle condition before leaving.
• Car: Safer for families or large groups. You can rent a self-drive car or a car with a driver in Dong Hoi.
• Bus: If you don't want to drive, you can take a bus from Dong Hoi to Minh Hoa, then hire a motorbike taxi or taxi to get to the lake.

Before setting off, you should bring a paper map or use a navigation app on your phone, as some sections leading to the lake are quite deserted with few directional signs. Additionally, check the weather before your trip, especially avoiding the rainy months (October to December), as roads can be slippery and difficult to navigate. From the very first survey trip, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts highly appreciated the scenic value of Yen Phu Lake and decided to choose this place as the location to recreate "Skull Island" in the movie Kong: Skull Island. Many important scenes, such as helicopter landings or dramatic confrontations between Kong and Skullcrawlers, were filmed in this area.

The combination of limestone terrain, a wide lake surface, and an almost pristine natural environment delivered impressive visual effects, meeting the strict requirements of a large-scale cinematic work. This factor contributed to convincing the production crew to select Quang Binh as a primary filming location. Today, visitors to Yen Phu Lake can still visit and capture shots at the locations featured in the movie, offering a clear connection between travel and cinema.
