Hong Dao Wine originates from the land of Quang Nam, specifically Bao An village (Go Noi), Dien Ban district – now belonging to Da Nang city. According to folk legend, this wine originates from the story of a hunter named Hong Dao and his father. Once upon a time, during a hunting trip, Hong Dao discovered ripe celestial peaches on the mountain. The father and son used new rice, fermented it with the peaches and leaf yeast to create a uniquely delicious wine, buried underground for natural fermentation. The wine was not only delicious but also carried cultural significance, often used in wedding ceremonies, Lunar New Year (Tet), or family feasts.

However, there are some interesting debates regarding the true origin of Hong Dao Wine. Some researchers, such as poet Le Minh Quoc, suggest that "Hong Dao" is merely a poetic expression, originating not from peach fruit but from dyeing base rice wine (white rice spirit) with red incense sticks or incense wrappers to create a pink color. Nonetheless, according to 17th-century historical documents, Hong Dao Wine has long been associated with the Quang Nam – Da Nang region, becoming a symbol of hospitality and national spirit. This wine is also compared to Central Highlands tube wine or Binh Dinh Bau Da wine, but stands out due to its gentle, non-harsh flavor.
