1. Mandatory health requirements for visiting Son Doong Cave

To participate in the Son Doong Cave expedition tour, health is the single most critical factor as the journey lasts 6 days and 5 nights over harsh terrain, far from hospitals and medical facilities. You must self-assess and honestly disclose your medical condition via a survey form when booking the tour.

Basic health requirements include:

  • Good general physical condition: No signs of prolonged fatigue, capable of enduring high-intensity activities such as continuous trekking for 8-10 hours/day.
  • No cardiovascular, respiratory, or joint issues: The journey requires climbing, river crossings, and carrying a 5-7kg backpack, so any health issues could pose significant risks.
  • Pre-tour medical check: 45 days before departure, you must update your health information. If there are changes (such as a new injury), Oxalis reserves the right to review your participation without a refund if requirements are not met.
  • Personal medical insurance: The tour only includes basic insurance under Vietnamese law (up to VND 50 million), so it is recommended to purchase international travel insurance covering extreme sports and cave rescue.

If you have any chronic conditions, please contact Oxalis for specific advice, as their expert team evaluates every case individually.

2. Age and physical fitness requirements for the Son Doong tour

The Son Doong Cave tour is only suitable for adults in good physical condition and is not intended for children or frail elderly individuals. Specifically:

  • Age limit: From 18 to 70 years old. Under 18 is not permitted due to high risks; over 70 requires proof of exceptional physical fitness through a separate assessment.
  • Required physical fitness: Difficulty Level 6/6 (the hardest in the Oxalis system). You must have mountain trekking experience and train regularly (at least 3-4 sessions/week focusing on cardio and endurance). The itinerary includes:
    • Trekking 25km through mountain trails with an elevation gain/loss of 800m.
    • Crossing rivers and streams about 50 times (knee-deep water or higher).
    • Exploring 8km of caves involving rope climbing and navigating complex terrain.
    • Descending 90m into the cave entrance and climbing the "Great Wall of Vietnam" (18m ladder + 72m at a 45-degree slope) with safety gear.

If you lack experience, consider joining easier tours first to build up your fitness.

Not everyone is suitable for this tour. Below are medical conditions and cases that are strictly prohibited or discouraged:

  • Strictly prohibited medical conditions: Pregnant women, individuals with severe cardiovascular issues (e.g., heart failure, recent heart attack), severe asthma, uncontrolled epilepsy, or joint disorders (inability to climb). Additionally, if you take medications affecting stamina (such as sedatives), you must declare them for evaluation.
  • Ineligible cases: Individuals with little outdoor experience, poor general health, or unrecovered injuries. The tour is not for children under 18, people with mobility disabilities, or anyone unable to self-care in a wilderness environment.
  • Consequences of non-compliance: Providing false information may result in tour cancellation without refund or being requested to stop mid-journey.

4. Required skills before joining the Son Doong Cave tour

Although advanced skills like professional mountaineering are not required, basic skills are essential to ensure safety:

  • Basic trekking skills: Knowing how to walk on rough terrain and cross streams without slipping. Hiking or caving experience is a big plus.
  • Using safety equipment: You will be instructed on using safety harnesses, ropes, helmets, and gloves. Prior climbing skills are not required, but strict adherence to expert guidance is mandatory.
  • Basic survival skills: Knowing how to pack a light backpack (20-30L), protect against insects (mosquito spray), and handle cold water when swimming in underground rivers (temperature 16-22°C).
  • Pre-tour training: Oxalis provides training guides on their website, including cardio exercises, squats, and real-life trekking.

The mandatory pre-tour safety briefing will help you get acquainted, but be mentally prepared for an environment with no mobile signal or Wi-Fi.

5. Best time and season to visit Son Doong Cave

The tour only operates from January to August every year to avoid the rainy and flood season (September-December), when the cave can flood dangerously.

  • Ideal seasons:
    • January–March: Cool weather with warm sunshine, offering a chance to witness sunbeams piercing into the cave.
    • April–May: Warm, wildflowers in bloom, mystical mist inside the cave.
    • June–August: Hot outside but cool inside the cave (22-25°C), ideal for swimming in streams and lakes.
  • Tour duration: 6 days 5 nights, departing weekly (usually Tuesdays or Saturdays). The itinerary may be adjusted due to weather conditions (rain making trails slippery).
  • 2026 Update: Tours are fully booked for 2026 and most of 2027, so book early (there may be a 2-year waitlist).

Check the weather via Accuweather Phong Nha before departure to prepare appropriate clothing.

6. Safety and conservation regulations for exploring Son Doong Cave

Safety and conservation are top priorities, supported by a crew of up to 25 staff members (cave experts, tour guides, safety assistants, porters, chefs).

  • Safety regulations: Use European-standard equipment (harnesses, ropes, helmets). Satellite phones and walkie-talkies are available for emergencies; rescue takes 1-4 hours. No mobile signal inside the cave. You must sign a risk release waiver before the tour.
  • Environmental conservation: Use eco-friendly compost toilets; indiscriminate urinating or littering is strictly prohibited. Do not touch the unique ecosystem (jungle inside the cave, ancient creatures). Limited to 1,000 visitors per year to protect the cave.
  • Potential risks: Sudden flash floods, insects, venomous creatures, which can be mitigated by using insect repellent and following instructions.

Violation of regulations may result in disqualification from the tour without a refund.

7. Important considerations before deciding to visit Son Doong Cave

Son Doong Cave is not just a holiday trip; it is a demanding expedition requiring serious preparation in terms of physical fitness, mindset, and logistics. Before signing up for the tour, carefully consider the following key factors:

  • Gear preparation: Bring trekking shoes with good grip, quick-drying clothes, a small backpack, personal medication, ID/passport. Avoid bringing excess luggage or inappropriate attire (dresses, traditional long dresses).
