1. Location and History

Duyet Thi Duong Theater is located in the southeast of the Purple Forbidden City, built in 1826 under the reign of King Minh Mang. This structure was originally used as a venue for performing songs, dances, operas, and classical theater to entertain the King, royal family members, and high-ranking mandarins. In addition, it was also a place for solemn celebrations, especially major royal ceremonies.

Having existed for nearly 200 years, Duyet Thi Duong has suffered many impacts from time and war, causing the building to degrade seriously. From 1995 to 2002, the theater underwent a large-scale restoration to restore its original beauty, preserving traditional architectural and cultural values. Today, Duyet Thi Duong has been revived, becoming an indispensable destination for tourists who want to learn about Hue royal court culture.

  • Address: Duyet Thi Duong Theater, Doan Thi Diem, Phu Hau, Hue City, Thua Thien Hue Province.
  • Opening hours: 06:30 – 17:30.
  • Ticket price: 300,000 VND per show (updated in 2025), with two fixed daily time slots: morning from 10:00 – 10:35 and afternoon from 15:00 – 15:35.

Having witnessed the golden moments of the Nguyen Dynasty, today Duyet Thi Duong retains its full value, inviting visitors to admire a unique architectural work and enjoy the essence of royal arts, ensuring that every step here is an emotional journey into the past.

2. Unique Architecture

Duyet Thi Duong covers an area of up to 11,740 m², of which the theater's construction area is 1,182 m². The architecture of the theater reflects the sophistication and grandeur of the royal style, featuring splendidly lacquered and gilded interiors.

  • Interior: The ceiling is decorated with carved reliefs depicting the sun, moon, and stars, symbolizing a miniature universe of the Nguyen Dynasty.
  • Stage: Located in the center of the theater, the square-shaped stage is paved with French cement tiles. Behind the stage are dressing rooms and storage for performance props.
  • Audience area: The theater features a two-story structure. The first floor was reserved for the King and high-ranking mandarins, furnished with intricately carved ironwood chairs. The second floor was designated for court ladies and eunuchs, offering a convenient view of the entire stage. In particular, the area for the Queen and concubines featured a throne on a high platform, separated by bamboo screens to ensure privacy.
