1. Topographical features and specific data

Quang Binh has a total natural area of 8,065.27 km2, accounting for 2.41% of the country's total area, with narrow and steep terrain sloping from West to East, situated on the eastern slope of the Truong Son Range. The terrain is divided into three main regions:

  • High mountain region: Accounting for over 85% of the area, mainly in the West, with mountain ranges belonging to Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park. This is an ancient karst area, formed over 400 million years ago, featuring a complex cave system including over 104 km of caves, among which are: Phong Nha Cave system: Over 44.5 km long, with boat tours venturing 1,500 m deep, achieving 7 criteria of the world's most beautiful caves. Son Doong, discovered in 2009, is believed to have the largest cave passage in the world in terms of diameter and continuity, with evidence of hydrothermal activity and giant stalactites.
  • Hilly and midland region: Including districts such as Bo Trach, Quang Trach, Quang Ninh, Le Thuy, Dong Hoi, with moderate terrain, suitable for agriculture and livestock farming.
  • Coastal plain region: Accounting for nearly 15% of the area, including beaches like Nhat Le, Da Nhay Beach, and coastal sand areas in Quang Trach, Bo Trach, Quang Ninh, Le Thuy, Ba Don, Dong Hoi. This area develops fishing thanks to a continental shelf 2.6 times larger than the land area.
  • The river system in Quang Binh is short and steep but plays a crucial role. There are 5 main rivers: Roon, Gianh, Ly Hoa, Dinh, Nhat Le with a total basin of 7,778 km², a total length of 343 km, providing about 4 billion m³ of water annually.

Regarding land resources, Quang Binh has 10 main soil groups. Grey soil accounts for the majority (about 63.95% of the area), followed by shallow soil, sandy soil, and alluvial soil, creating favorable conditions for agricultural and forestry production.

2. Ecosystem and biodiversity

Besides land resources, Quang Binh also possesses a rich ecosystem and biodiversity. Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, a valuable primeval forest of the province, was recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage in 2003 and expanded in 2015.  Covering over 123,000 ha surrounded by a large buffer zone, it consists of three main areas: strictly protected area, ecological restoration area, and administrative/service area. Forests cover most of the area, with up to 84% being primeval forests belonging to the tropical rainforest system with rich vegetation.

In terms of biodiversity, Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park is home to thousands of rare flora and fauna species. Specifically, over 2,700 plant species, including over 400 species endemic to Vietnam, reflect the richness and uniqueness of the region's flora. Regarding fauna, this area records 1,074 vertebrate species belonging to 338 genera, 134 families, and 43 orders. In addition, there are 352 invertebrate species, of which mollusks consist of 10 species belonging to 8 genera and 6 families, while arthropods dominate with 292 species across 5 classes. These figures show that Phong Nha - Ke Bang is one of the most important biodiversity centers in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

In addition to vast green forests, Phong Nha - Ke Bang also features a mysterious cave world with many special creatures such as cave scorpions, eyeless fish, lizards, snakes, and bats—all adapted to the darkness and humid underground environment.

With majestic natural landscapes, from ancient forests, rivers, and streams to unique cave systems, ideal conditions are created for ecotourism and adventure tourism. Highlighted activities in Quang Binh include:

- Cave exploration: Visitors can take a boat into Phong Nha Cave, trek through the jungle to En Cave, or join an expedition to conquer Son Doong – the world's largest cave, attracting tourists from all over.

- Nature experiences: Kayaking on the Son River, camping in the forest, or trying ziplining at Chay River - Dark Cave, offering a feeling that is both relaxing and adventurous.

- Coastal relaxation: Da Nhay Beach with uniquely shaped rock formations is a favorite check-in spot for many tourists. This location also appeared in the movie "The Immortal" (2018) and notably charges no entrance fee.

In recent years, Quang Binh tourism has aimed toward greater sustainability. Ecotours encourage environmental protection, such as leave-no-trace camping, limiting carbon emissions, and developing green coastal resorts. This aligns with the province's clean energy development direction, featuring wind and solar power projects that leverage monsoon tropical climate conditions to foster both economic development and environmental protection.

4. Influence of topography on life and culture

Quang Binh's topography also deeply influences the lives and culture of local residents. The western part consists of rugged mountainous terrain with predominantly reddish-yellow soil, suitable for industrial crops and forestry development. Forests here cover over 615,000 ha with abundant natural timber reserves, providing a livelihood for many households committed to forestry.

Along the coast, residents take advantage of the vast continental shelf to develop seafood fishing. Marine reserves are estimated at around 100,000 tons per year, featuring many valuable seafood species like spiny lobster, tiger prawn, squid, along with coral reefs spanning tens of hectares. White coral reefs are not only a raw material source for handicrafts but also contribute to a rich marine ecosystem.

The terrain is also closely linked to local cultural life. The Nam Hai Vuong Temple Festival at Da Nhay Beach is a unique religious tradition where people use water from Coc Well—a rock naturally shaped like a toad—for worship, expressing devotion to the sea. Tam Toa Church, with its bell tower standing tall by the Nhat Le River, serves as a war relic set amidst a serene coastal landscape, marking historical ups and downs.
