Tam Co Cave - Historical Witness to Stories Never Forgotten

Tam Co Cave is located in Tan Trach Commune, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, along Road 20 - Quyet Thang, where US military aircraft once relentlessly bombed to sever this vital supply route. Spanning 125 km and connecting Phong Nha (Quang Binh) to Aky, Ta Le, and Phulanhich (Laos), this road became a critical arterial route for transporting weapons, food, and fuel to the Southern battlefield during the war. Consequently, the young volunteers on duty had to face danger every single day.

The special significance of Tam Co Cave lies in its strategic role along the Truong Son Trail. During the anti-American resistance war (1955-1975), Road 20 - Quyet Thang was a vital transportation artery, helping carry weapons, food, and forces from the North to the South. This cave, about 20m deep and 10m wide, served as a safe shelter for soldiers and young volunteers before enemy bombs. Today, it is not only a historical relic but also a spiritual tourism highlight, contributing to the preservation of national cultural heritage.

The Tam Co Cave incident occurred on November 14, 1972, amidst the fierce stage of the anti-American resistance war. At that time, 8 young volunteers from Squad 2, Company 552, Young Volunteer Brigade 55 in Quang Binh were tasked with filling bomb craters and repairing roads on Road 20 - Quyet Thang. During a violent bombing raid by the US Air Force, a massive boulder weighing thousands of tons fell, completely sealing the entrance of the cave where they were taking shelter.

Their comrades fought against time and bombs to find a way to save them. People tried pulling the stone with tracked vehicles, carefully inserting tubes to feed thin porridge through the gaps to hold on to life. And hearing the weak cries echoing from inside the cave, "Save us!", everyone felt agonizing pain in their hearts. Hands hardened by hoes, shovels, and bombs dug continuously for days and nights, but all efforts were in vain. On the 9th day, the cries gradually faded and then stopped completely. That stone cave became the shared grave of eight young people, only in their late teens and early twenties.  

Tam Co Cave is not only a sacred historical relic, but it also conceals mysterious stories associated with the number 8—a haunting coincidence that makes anyone setting foot here shiver with emotion. Could this be more than just a coincidence, but a sacred mark of those who fell, embodying into heaven and earth so that nature quietly remembers in its own unique way?  

Mr. Nguyen Tu Vy, Head of the Management Board of the Memorial Temple for Martyrs of Road 20 – Quyet Thang, has witnessed many unexplainable phenomena at this site firsthand. Right in front of the cave entrance, a strange banana tree produces a bunch with exactly 8 hands every year, no more, no less. What makes it special is that this phenomenon does not happen just once, but repeats year after year like an invisible mark engraving the presence of eight souls who left their youth amidst the Truong Son mountains and forests. Could their spirits still be here, blending into the mountain breeze and forest trees, silently reminding the world of a story that never grows old?

Not stopping there, in the area of the Memorial Temple of Road 20 – Quyet Thang, a pair of geckos also laid exactly 8 eggs. And on the night of the 50th anniversary of opening the legendary Truong Son Trail, as night fell over the quiet space of the forest, people once again heard the gecko call echo 8 times and then stop, like an echo in memory of the immortal souls.  

These phenomena, even if science cannot yet explain them, are to those who have set foot here a sign of sacredness and memories that never fade. Could it be that those who rest here never truly left, but continue to watch over every step, listening to every word of gratitude from visitors? The number 8 is not merely a coincidence; it is a symbol of eternity, of souls merged into the homeland's mountains and rivers, forever immortal with time.

The Tam Co Cave Relic is not only a historical witness but has also become a sacred destination attracting numerous tourists. To expand the scale and preserve historical values, many important projects have been implemented, such as restoring Tam Co Cave, building the Memorial Temple, a stone bas-relief, a waiting area, an interpretation area, along with facilities serving working staff and visiting tourists. With its sacred significance and special location on the historic arterial route, this place has increasingly become an unmissable stop when visiting Quang Binh. Currently, the Tam Co Cave Relic has been included in the Master Plan for the Construction of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park up to 2030, contributing to preserving and promoting the historical value of a heroic era.

After 53 years since the day they sacrificed and rested in the Truong Son forest, hundreds of samples have been collected. Many vehicles traveled through the night across Quang Binh, Thanh Hoa, and northern provinces to collect DNA samples scientifically, carefully, and accurately. To date, 8 DNA samples matching the specific identities of the martyrs have been identified, helping connect and confirm relatives with their families.

Tam Co Cave is not just a destination on the map of Quang Binh, but also a place where wartime memories are preserved through silent sacrifices and the bravery of ordinary people. Amidst the Truong Son mountains and forests today, the quiet atmosphere here reminds each of us of the price of peace and the responsibility to preserve historical values traded for blood and youth. Coming to Tam Co Cave, people visit not only to sightsee, but to pause, to express gratitude, and to never forget the stories that formed the depth of national history.
