Ru Linh Primary Forest: Quang Tri's Green Treasure

Ru Linh Primary Forest is located across Vinh Hoa and Hien Thanh communes (formerly Vinh Hien commune), Vinh Linh district, Quang Tri province. Previously, the forest spanned an area of around 170 ha; however, the preserved primary forest section now covers only about 93–100 ha.

What makes Ru Linh particularly valuable is that it is considered the only remaining primary forest in the plains of Quang Tri. How to get there: From Dong Ha or neighboring provinces, you can travel by motorbike, car, or bus to Vinh Linh district. From the district center, head toward Vinh Hien past landmarks like gas stations or agricultural supply stores; it only takes about 5-10 minutes to reach the forest.

The name “Ru Linh” originates from local characteristics: “Ru” means dense forest, and “Linh” refers to the linh plant (a water-rich bamboo climber) commonly found in the forest. Before 1945, this was a dense, dark forest with rich wildlife, even inhabited by tigers and leopards.

During the resistance wars against the French and Americans, Ru Linh served as a “living museum” and a vital shelter for local people and soldiers. Traces of bomb craters can still be seen today. After the war, locals (especially households assigned to protect it since the late 1970s) strictly preserved the forest, viewing it as a shared asset for future generations.

Ru Linh possesses a closed evergreen humid tropical forest vegetation, boasting over 200 plant species belonging to 72 families. Many belong to rare and precious groups (Groups I and II), such as:

• Precious timber trees: Ironwood (Lim xanh), Sindora wood (Gụ lau), Tarrietia javanica (Huyệnh), Vatica odorata (Táu mật), wild persimmon, forest chestnut, agarwood, schefflera...

• Characteristics: Water-bearing linh plants and various climber species.

Regarding fauna, despite being close to residential areas, around 73 species are recorded, including:

• Birds: 60 species (egrets, cuckoos, owls, bulbuls, starlings, shrikes...).

• Mammals: 12 species (porcupines, pangolins, lorises, civets, red-bellied squirrels...).

• Other species: Snakes, pythons, barking deer, wild boars, indigenous chickens...

This ecosystem is not only rich but also retains its primary structure, with massive ancient trees and dense canopies providing a cool environment even in the heat of summer.
