However, the actual length may be even greater because some parts of the underground rivers and passages have not been fully explored. The maximum height reaches 200 meters (some measurements up to 243.84 meters), the width reaches up to 150-160 meters, and the maximum depth is about 150 meters. Some cavern chambers are so massive that a Boeing 747 airplane could fly through without touching the walls. For comparison, a standard Olympic swimming pool has a volume of only about 2,500 m³, meaning Son Doong Cave could hold roughly 15,400 such pools. This size not only sets records but also creates a distinct ecosystem inside the cave, with sunlight shining through massive sinkholes (dolines).

Compared to the world's largest caves, Son Doong Cave excels in volume. For example, Deer Cave in Malaysia – which previously held the record – has a volume of only about 9.5 million m³, making it about 5 times smaller than Son Doong Cave. En Cave, also in Vietnam and ranked third in the world, is only a small fraction of Son Doong. Some other caves like Paradise Cave (31.4 km long) or Phong Nha Cave focus on length or boat exploration experiences, but do not achieve a massive volume like Son Doong. In terms of length, Son Doong Cave (9 km) is shorter than some caves like Mammoth Cave in the US (over 676 km total system length), but leads in the size of a single passage. This difference lies in the geological structure: Son Doong Cave formed from Carboniferous/Permian limestone, creating immense and towering cavern chambers.

Son Doong Cave is recognized as the world's largest cave based on passage volume, according to measurements by the BCRA and confirmed by National Geographic in 2011, as well as Guinness World Records in 2013. The main criterion is not length but overall volume (38.5 million m³), vastly superior to other caves. In 2009, the British-Vietnamese expedition team measured and announced that this cave was twice the size of Deer Cave in cross-section. Furthermore, the uniqueness of the internal ecosystem – such as primeval forests, underground rivers, and its own microclimate – contributes to its scientific value, helping the cave gain recognition from UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage site within Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park. Son Doong Cave was discovered in 1990 (or 1991 according to some sources) by Mr. Ho Khanh, a local resident in Phong Nha, while he was seeking shelter from rain in the forest. However, it was not until 2009 that the British-Vietnamese expedition team led by Howard Limbert conducted a comprehensive survey using laser equipment for measurements. They scaled the "Great Wall of Vietnam" in 2010 to complete the survey, confirming a length of 9 km and a colossal volume. Since then, the cave has been widely introduced through National Geographic and scientific documents. Subsequent expeditions discovered an additional ~200 miles of unknown caves in the region.
