Visiting Hue to Explore Kien Trung Palace – Preserving the Grace and Elegance of the Nguyen Dynasty

Kien Trung Palace (or Kien Trung Pavilion) is an important palace within the Forbidden Purple City – the most private area of the Nguyen Dynasty's royal palace. Situated at the northernmost point of the sacred axis running through the center of the Forbidden Purple City, it is one of the five major structures on the main axis, behind Thai Hoa Palace, Can Chanh Palace, Can Thanh Palace, and Khon Thai Residence.

The name "Kien Trung" carries the meaning of "establishing uprightness", reflecting the governing philosophy of the Nguyen Dynasty. It was not only a residence but also an architectural symbol of the end of the dynasty, encapsulating a rare East-West cultural crossover in Hue.

Few people know that before acquiring the magnificent Asian-European palace look of today, the site of Kien Trung Palace was once home to two other architectural structures.

• Minh Vien Pavilion (1827 - 1876): Under the reign of King Minh Mang, a 3-story wooden pavilion named Minh Vien was built for the king to enjoy the scenery and cool breezes. Minh Vien Pavilion was once praised by King Thieu Tri as "The First Scenic Spot of the Capital". However, due to severe deterioration, the pavilion was dismantled during the reign of King Tu Duc.
• Du Cuu Pavilion (1913 - 1916): In 1913, King Duy Tan ordered the construction of a new pavilion featuring more modern architecture on the old foundation, naming it Du Cuu. This building had only 2 floors with fairly simple architecture.

When King Khai Dinh ascended the throne in 1916, he renamed Du Cuu Pavilion to Kien Trung Palace. Between 1921 and 1923, King Khai Dinh rebuilt Kien Trung Palace entirely, turning it into a unique, modern architectural masterpiece. The word "Kien" means "to build, create", while "Trung" means "upright, righteous", expressing the king's desire for a strong and stable dynasty.

Under King Khai Dinh, Kien Trung Palace not only used sturdy materials like cement and steel, but was also equipped with modern amenities such as electric lights, running water, fountains, and lightning rods, marking a strong fusion of Eastern and Western cultures.

After more than 70 years of lying dormant, in 2019, the Hue Monuments Conservation Center initiated a project to restore Kien Trung Palace with a budget of over 123 billion VND. The project was executed meticulously, preserving the original foundation structure and restoring the building based on valuable historical documents.

After 5 years of restoration, Kien Trung Palace officially opened its doors to visitors on the occasion of the Lunar New Year 2024 (Year of the Dragon). The building is a harmonious combination of multiple architectural styles: the grandeur of Nguyen royal architecture, the romance of Italian Renaissance architecture, and the refinement of French architecture, creating an ensemble rich in Indochina style.

Kien Trung Palace is an Indochinese architectural masterpiece, seamlessly blending French, Italian Renaissance, and traditional Vietnamese elements. It utilizes durable materials such as steel and cement, decorated with intricate porcelain mosaics – a signature style of the Khai Dinh era. The majestic facade features dragon-carved steps, wide verandas, and an upper floor echoing the main floor. The interior is lavish with vibrant motifs, European furniture mixed with Asian details. This stands as vivid proof of the cultural fusion at the end of the Nguyen Dynasty.

Kien Trung Palace is not only one of the most magnificent palaces of the Nguyen Dynasty, but it is also associated with the last two kings and the pivotal abdication event in national history.
