Admiring the kapok tree - the first Vietnam Heritage Tree in Quang Binh

Amidst the majestic limestone mountain region of Tuyen Hoa, the heritage kapok tree stands towering as a witness to time, quietly standing there for hundreds of years to tell the story of the nature and people of Quang Binh. Belonging to the Malvaceae family (Bombax ceiba), the tree is about 25–30 m high, with a canopy spreading nearly 20 m wide, and a trunk circumference of up to 18 m, so large that ten adults holding hands still cannot fully encircle it. The rough trunk and large branches stretching and winding over the years create a majestic appearance amidst the Truong Son mountains and forests.

What makes the tree uniquely rare is not only its colossal size but also its vibrant orange-yellow flowering season – a color shade very different from the familiar red of kapok trees in many other regions. Every March to April, when thousands of flowers bloom simultaneously and gradually turn from orange to golden yellow, the entire canopy lights up amidst the green backdrop of fields and limestone cliffs, creating a scene that is both majestic and poetic.

The tree is located at the foot of Len Cay Gao, inside the Tuyen Hoa Hatinh Langur Community Reserve, next to Ba Son Shrine – where local people for generations have come to offer incense, pray for peace, and express gratitude to the forest and mountain deities. Surrounding the base of the tree are exposed roots and branches covered with epiphytes, forming a small ecosystem in the deep forest. Every flowering season, Hatinh langurs, wild birds, and many other animals return to forage, making the space vibrant while still retaining a rare tranquility.

Not only a Vietnam Heritage Tree, the Thach Hoa kapok tree is also a symbol of resilient vitality and the harmony between nature and culture. Going through many historical changes, the "ancient tree" of over seven centuries old still stands proudly between heaven and earth, like a green treasure that nature has graciously bestowed upon the land of Quang Binh.

According to the elders of Thach Hoa commune, the kapok tree has been present since the early days when residents arrived to reclaim land and establish the village about 400–500 years ago. Through many ups and downs of history, the tree has not only grown alongside the land but has also become a quiet witness to countless events, closely tied to the material and spiritual lives of many generations of local people.

During the resistance war against French colonialism, the area under the tree canopy was used by villagers to build lime kilns to produce materials for constructing communal houses, shrines, and public structures. In the years of the anti-American war, the kapok tree continued to serve as a shelter for people from bombs and bullets. Despite enduring many bombings, storms, and the harshness of time, the tree still stands resiliently. In the past, the entire area had four ancient kapok trees, but today this is the only remaining tree, serving as a testament to the enduring vitality of nature.

Beyond its historical value, the kapok tree is also closely tied to the spiritual life of the community through Ba Son Shrine right beside it. In the minds of local people, the tree is considered a "sacred treasure", a symbol of peace, protection, and community bonding. On every festival, New Year, or traditional worship day, villagers come to light incense beneath the tree, sending prayers for a peaceful life, favorable harvests, and healthy children. Today, the Thach Hoa kapok tree is not only a Vietnam Heritage Tree of biological and landscape value, but also a living cultural heritage, preserving memories of the land and reflecting the resilient, affectionate, and enduring spirit of Quang Binh people across generations.

To admire the most vibrant beauty of the heritage kapok tree, visitors should come in March–April, when orange-yellow flowers cover the canopy. During other seasons of the year, the tree still retains an ancient beauty, standing out against the forest landscape of Tuyen Hoa.

From Dong Hoi, travel about 80 km along the National Highway to Thach Hoa commune (Tuyen Hoa) to easily reach the tree thanks to convenient transportation routes.

When visiting, please maintain cleanliness, do not break branches or damage the tree, and respect the spiritual space at Ba Son Shrine.
