In Quang Tri, chili is not just a condiment but an inseparable part of culinary life. Poet Nguyen Khoa Diem once wrote: “Learning to eat chili to trick the tongue”; the people of Quang Tri also use spiciness to soften the frugality of meals during difficult days. This land, with its harsh climate, intense heat, and prolonged rains, has forged the habit of eating spicy food as a way to cope with the weather and enrich the flavor of dishes.
Cau Nhi pickled chili originated from the arid land of Cau Nhi village, where locals leveraged natural conditions to cultivate spicy, flavor-rich chili varieties. This chili appears not only in daily family meals but also during Tet holidays and death anniversaries, serving as a symbol of the richness and resilience of the people of Quang Tri.
Cau Nhi village, located in Hai Tan commune, Hai Lang district, is famous for its traditional chili farming. Grown on sandy loam soil under Central Vietnam's intense heat, the chili plants yield small peppers that are intensely spicy and uniquely aromatic.
Cau Nhi pickled chili is not only a gift of nature but also the crystallization of skillful hands and processing experience of local residents. From seed selection and cultivation to the pickling technique, everything is carried out with meticulous care and subtlety, creating a unique condiment distinct from any other region.
