Quang Tri Ancient Citadel is located in Ward 2 (or Quang Tri Ward), Quang Tri Town, Quang Tri Province, right on the southern bank of the Thach Han River. Located about 2 km east of National Highway 1A, the citadel easily connects to main transport routes.
Construction History: The citadel was built in 1809 during the reign of King Gia Long of the Nguyen Dynasty, originally serving as a military fortress and administrative center. It features a square shape, surrounded by a moat, and was the provincial headquarters across various periods.
Historical Significance of 1972: During the Spring-Summer Campaign of 1972, the Liberation Army of South Vietnam defended the Ancient Citadel for 81 days and nights (from June 28 to September 16, 1972). It was one of the fiercest battles, involving a massive volume of bombs and ammunition. After the war, the citadel was almost completely flattened, leaving only a few traces such as the East Gate. Today, it stands as a special national monument, honoring the heroic sacrifice for national independence.
The Monument inside the citadel has 81 steps, symbolizing the 81 fiery days and nights – a meaningful and touching place to visit.
