Nam O fish salad originates from Nam O fishing village, located in Hoa Hiep Nam Ward, Lien Chieu District, Da Nang City. This small coastal village, situated about 10–15 km north of the city center, has long been famous as a traditional craft village renowned for its rich Nam O fish sauce and fresh seafood dishes carrying the distinctive flavor of Central Vietnam.
For generations, the lives of local residents have been closely tied to the sea. Upon returning from fishing trips, fishermen often used herring (also known locally as "cá ve")—a small fish with sweet flesh abundantly caught in the waters of Da Nang—to prepare a simple yet creative dish: fish salad.

According to historical records and local oral tradition, Nam O fish salad appeared hundreds of years ago as an inseparable part of life in the fishing village. Initially, it was just a rustic meal for fishermen, making good use of freshly caught fish. Over time, however, the natural sweet taste of raw fish combined with sour, spicy, and nutty seasonings created a special flavor, transforming this simple dish into a famous specialty of Da Nang.
Today, Nam O village is recognized not only as the cradle of traditional fish salad but also as a unique cultural destination where visitors can witness the salad-making process firsthand, savor authentic flavors, and feel the deep pride of the coastal locals. This dish has now been recognized as an intangible cultural heritage, affirming the historical value and unique cultural identity of Da Nang.
