Mu Me Waterfall is located in the core zone of the Dong Chau – Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve, one of the last remaining large, continuous lowland evergreen forests in Vietnam. It is referred to as the "green diamond" of Quang Binh and Southeast Asia due to its outstanding biodiversity value. The forest ecosystem here exhibits characteristics of a tropical rainforest, featuring a complex multi-layered canopy structure, high coverage, and a humid, fresh atmosphere year-round. Stepping into this forest, visitors feel as though they have entered another world, completely detached from life outside.
A multi-layered, colorful green carpet
The most impressive element when winding along the trail leading to Mu Me Waterfall is the enveloping presence of green. An endless green of many layers, from towering ancient trees to moss-covered carpets cloaking the ground.
- Emergent layer and main canopy layer: Towering high are centuries-old timber trees, their rough, sturdy trunks reaching straight into the sky, forming a giant green canopy that shields against sunlight. Sunlight struggles to filter through this dense layer of leaves, casting magical shimmering sunbeams on the humid forest floor.
- Understory layer: Beneath is the competition among smaller timber trees, shrubs, and palm species, creating a dense cover that contributes to the forest's diversity.
- Ground layer: The floor is covered by a thick layer of leaf litter and countless small plants, ferns, and mosses. They blanket rocks and ancient tree stumps alike, bestowing a soft, ancient, and vibrant beauty. The air constantly carries the faint damp scent of earth, decaying leaves, and the pure fragrance of the mountains.
- Lianas and epiphytic plants: Intermingled between forest layers are countless woody lianas wrapping around large trunks like giant pythons. High up on branches, epiphytic orchids, mistletoes, and ferns display their vibrant beauty, adding unique accents to the green forest panorama. They form natural "hanging gardens," further enriching the forest's diversity and wondrous charm.
With its pristine beauty and rich ecosystem, this area truly deserves to be called a green kingdom, where nature still retains its intact freshness and magnificence, contributing to the preservation of the country's precious biodiversity.
