Tre Ba De is not only a familiar dish to the people of Da Nang, but also a story of a talented woman who brought the culinary soul of Hue to Quang land. Mrs. De – real name Dang Thi Kim Lien, born in 1922 in Vy Da village (Hue) into a poor townsperson family with eight siblings. In 1954, following her husband to Quang Nam – Da Nang to start a business, she began making tre to earn a living. It was during those difficult years, with skillful hands and creativity, that she created a special tre recipe, combining rustic Central ingredients with refined fermentation techniques from the Hue royal court.

By 1956, the Tre Ba De brand was officially born and quickly became a point of pride in Da Nang cuisine. Over six decades have passed, and that handcrafted tre still retains its signature flavor—mildly sour, pleasantly spicy, rich, and imbued with the taste of time. Instead of chasing industrialization, Tre Ba De is still made entirely by hand, from selecting the meat and wrapping the leaves to the natural fermentation process, helping the dish retain its pure umami taste and rustic Central charm.
Today, Tre Ba De is not just a delicacy, but also a "Quang land gift" rich in cultural significance. People often choose tre for Tet gifts or to send to distant friends, as a way to convey home love, sophistication, and the pride of Da Nang residents. Alongside Quang noodles or rice paper rolls with pork, Tre Ba De truly deserves to be a culinary icon defining the identity of Central Vietnam.
