Who Discovered Va Cave? Exploration Process and Mysteries Revealed

Va Cave was discovered by Mr. Ho Khanh (Pham Duy Khanh) in 1992 during a jungle trip. As a local resident of Phong Nha with many years of deep connection to the forest, he stumbled upon the cave containing an underground stream inside and named it Va Cave after the area's name long used by local people. Thanks to his intimate knowledge of the terrain and contributions to cave discovery, Mr. Ho Khanh later became world-famous for helping discover Son Doong Cave. He is considered one of the key figures bringing Quang Binh cave tourism to an international level.

It all began in 1992. During countless trips deep into the dense jungle to make a living or seek shelter, Mr. Ho Khanh, a local resident with a deep understanding of the area's terrain and ecosystem, stumbled upon an unusual cave entrance. At that time, even he might not have fully realized the significance of this discovery among the countless large and small caves in the region. This initial discovery marked the existence of Va Cave, yet it remained a little-known secret, hidden away waiting to be thoroughly explored.

It took 20 years for the true potential of Va Cave to gain systematic attention from experts. After information about this cave was re-shared by Mr. Ho Khanh and attracted the interest of explorers, an official survey was planned.

In 2012, the British Cave Research Association (often referred to as the British - Vietnamese Cave Expedition - BVCE), a prestigious organization with extensive experience in exploring and researching caves in Vietnam, conducted an important expedition to Va Cave. Leading the expedition team was Mr. Howard Limbert, a veteran cave expert who has made significant contributions to discovering and promoting caves in Phong Nha - Ke Bang, including Son Doong Cave.

During the 2012 survey, the team of British and Vietnamese experts conducted detailed mapping and surveying inside Va Cave. They not only re-confirmed its location and dimensions, but also studied the geological structure, unique speleothem formations, and the potential connection of the cave to others in the area. This professional and methodical work officially unveiled the secret covering Va Cave for two decades, placing it on the list of important and unique caves of the Phong Nha - Ke Bang World Natural Heritage site, while laying the foundation for further research and tourism development later on.

What makes Va Cave most appealing is its tower cone / raft cone speleothem system. These formations were formed in rimstone pools about 2m high, featuring very steep sides, rough surfaces, uniform sizes, and numbering in the thousands.

Formation mechanism (according to scientific hypotheses):

1. Raft cones: Water droplets containing calcium carbonate fall from the cave ceiling into the pool, creating a floating layer of crystals on the water surface. Subsequent drops cause them to sink to the bottom, gradually stacking into cone shapes. The outer layer creates a bumpy surface.

2. Tufa towers / geysermites: May be related to upwelling mineral-rich groundwater, crystallizing under suitable temperature conditions. However, there is no clear evidence of geothermal activity here.

Unanswered mysteries:

• Why are tower cones in Va Cave present in such large numbers and scale, while rarely seen elsewhere?

• Why do some cones have gentle slopes while others are very steep?
