Where is Survival Valley Located?

Survival Valley is located deep within the core zone of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province. Spanning up to 2,000 hectares, the valley features a rich diversity of terrains: limestone mountains, flat terrain, non-karst areas, primary forests, caves, and underground streams. It was once called "Thung Tre" due to its dense bamboo forests, and the name "Sinh Ton" (Survival) is linked to wartime history as a hideout and weapons transit point thanks to its rugged topography.

To get here, you need to set off from Dong Hoi City (the capital of Quang Binh) or Phong Nha town.

  • From Dong Hoi: Travel about 45 km along Highway 16 to Phong Nha - Ke Bang. From there, tours will pick you up in specialized vehicles to Km 15 on the West Branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway
  • From Phong Nha: A shorter distance of only 10–15 km to the starting point. You can travel by motorbike or taxi, but joining a tour provides tour guides and porters for support.
  • Transportation: Fly to Dong Hoi Airport, or take a train or sleeper bus from Hanoi/HCMC. From the airport, it takes about 1 hour to reach Phong Nha by taxi or bus.

Note: There is no direct car road into the valley; the main route involves a 15–17 km trek through the forest, making it suitable only for people in good physical condition.

Best Time to Visit Survival Valley

The best time to explore Survival Valley and Thuy Cung Cave is from March to August—the dry season in Quang Binh. During this period, the weather is sunny and dry with minimal rain, trekking trails are not slippery, and stream water levels are stable and safe for swimming. Avoid the rainy season (September to February) due to potential flooding, which causes tour cancellations and hazardous conditions.

If traveling during peak season (April–July), book your tour early to secure spots, especially for 2-day 1-night camping tours.
