Quang Nam banh dap is a famous rustic specialty of the Quang land, particularly closely tied to Hoi An Ancient Town and surrounding areas. This dish is also known as banh trang dap or banh chap, standing out for its harmonious combination of the crispiness of grilled rice paper and the soft chewiness of the steamed rice sheet inside. The name "dap" (smash) comes from the way it is eaten: diners use their hands to gently press or smash it so the grilled rice paper breaks into pieces and sticks tightly to the steamed rice sheet, creating bites that are both crispy and chewy, thoroughly soaked in rich dipping sauce.
Banh dap is not only a simple snack, but also demonstrates the culinary creativity of Central Vietnam, where locals skillfully utilize familiar ingredients to create a unique and unforgettable flavor. This dish is popular from Quang Nam to other coastal provinces, but the Quang Nam version (especially in Hoi An) is usually highly rated thanks to its signature fermented fish sauce (mam nem) and subtle combination.
