1. Where is Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda?

Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda (also known as Linh Ung Son Tra Pagoda) is located in Lumbini Garden, Hoang Sa Street, Tho Quang Ward, Son Tra District, Da Nang City. The pagoda sits on the slopes of the Son Tra Peninsula, about 10 km northeast of the city center, at an altitude of approximately 693 m above sea level.

Blessed with an extremely prime geographical location, the pagoda rests its back against the majestic Son Tra mountain range and faces the vast East Sea, creating a scene that is both solemn and poetic. From the pagoda grounds, visitors can admire the panoramic view of Da Nang Bay, Thuan Phuoc Bridge, Ngu Hanh Son (Marble Mountains), and further away, Hai Van Pass winding between the sky and clouds. Not only prominent in scenery, Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda is also an important part of Da Nang's famous “spiritual triangle”.

The three Linh Ung pagodas include: Linh Ung Bai But (Son Tra), Linh Ung Non Nuoc (Marble Mountains), and Linh Ung Ba Na (Ba Na Hills), forming a unique system of spiritual destinations that attracts a large number of Buddhists and tourists to visit and worship every year.

2. History and spiritual significance of Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda

Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda was built latest among the "three Linh Ung pagodas" system in Da Nang, but it has the largest scale and has become the most famous spiritual destination in the city. According to folk legend, around the 19th century during the reign of King Minh Mang, local residents discovered a statue of Buddha floating ashore in this area. Remarkably, the statue remained intact, uncorroded by waves and wind, and was said to emit a sacred glow. Sensing the miracle, the locals established an altar for worship and since then named this land Bai But, meaning the Beach of the Buddha.

Over time, this area gradually became a revered spiritual site for local people. In 2004, Most Venerable Thich Thien Nguyen officially broke ground on the construction of a modern-scale pagoda. The foundation stone was laid on June 19, 2004 (Lunar calendar), marking the beginning of the project. After 6 years of construction, the pagoda was inaugurated on July 30, 2010 (June 19 in the Lunar calendar of the Year of the Tiger). Currently, the pagoda complex covers an area of about 20 hectares, with many architectural works expanded and completed over time.

Beyond its architectural and cultural value, Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda is also considered a gathering place for the sacred aura of heaven and earth, bringing peace and prosperity to Da Nang City. Many local residents believe that ever since the Lady Buddha (Guan Yin) statue at the pagoda was completed, the number of major storms hitting Da Nang has decreased significantly, and the weather has become milder. Therefore, the pagoda is not only a sacred place of worship but also regarded as a protective spiritual symbol for local residents and tourists visiting the coastal city.

3. The unique architecture of Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda on Son Tra Peninsula

Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda harmoniously combines traditional Vietnamese Nguyen Dynasty pagoda architecture with a modern style. The entire complex is built on gently sloping terrain, creating a majestic yet natural feeling.

Highlighted features:

  • Three-arch Gate (Cong Tam Quan): Grand and impressive, leading into the pagoda courtyard.
  • Main Sanctuary, Ancestor Hall, Monks' Quarters: Curved roof design, sturdy wooden pillars, decorated with exquisite dragon and phoenix motifs.
  • Arhat Garden: 18 Arhat statues carved from solid white stone along both sides of the path to the Main Sanctuary. Each statue expresses a human emotion (joy, anger, love, hatred, greed, anger, delusion...). The statues are vividly depicted down to the folds of their robes and facial expressions.

The panoramic view of the pagoda is lush green with trees, ponds, and ocean views, creating an ideal meditative space amidst the "green realm" of Son Tra.

4. The tallest Lady Buddha Statue in Vietnam at Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda

The Guan Yin Bodhisattva Statue at Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda is considered a prominent spiritual symbol and the "soul" of the entire pagoda complex. With its grand scale and sophisticated architecture, this structure not only makes a strong impression artistically but also holds deep spiritual significance for local residents and visitors. The statue stands 67 m tall, equivalent to a 30-story building, majestically atop a lotus pedestal with a diameter of 35 m. The statue faces the East Sea, with gentle eyes that seem to embrace and protect Da Nang City and the fishing boats venturing far offshore.

Key features of the Guan Yin Statue

  • Material: The statue is carved from solid white stone by master sculptors using exquisite craftsmanship and high finishing quality.
  • Internal structure: The interior consists of 17 floors, each worshipping different Buddhas with a total of 21 statues, creating the Buddhist concept of "Buddha within Buddha".
  • Symbolic details:
    • The right hand holds a vase of nectar (amrita), symbolizing compassion and the salvation of all living beings.
    • The left hand forms a mudra, expressing tranquility and wisdom.
    • On the crown of the statue rests a Shakyamuni Buddha statue about 2 m tall, further enhancing its solemnity and sacred meaning.

According to various documents and records in spiritual tourism, this is considered the tallest Guan Yin statue in Vietnam and among the largest in Southeast Asia. Notably, visitors can explore the inner floors of the statue to worship the Buddha statues and admire panoramic views of Da Nang City, the bay, and the Son Tra Peninsula from above. This experience brings a sense of serenity and sanctity, serving as one of the unforgettable highlights when visiting Linh Ung Bai But Pagoda.
