Rao Quan Hydropower Reservoir is located on the Rao Quan River – an upstream tributary of the Thach Han River, in Huong Linh Commune, Huong Hoa District, Quang Tri Province. The Quang Tri Water Resource - Hydropower Project commenced construction in August 2003 and was officially put into operation in July 2009.
Some main technical specifications:
- Capacity: 64 MW (2 units), average annual power generation of about 217-220 million kWh.
- Reservoir capacity: Approximately 163 million m³ (some sources record 141 million m³ for total capacity).
- Lake surface area: 8.61 million m².
- Normal water level: About 480m above sea level.
- Characteristics: Main dam is 75m high and 540m long; the water conveyance tunnel is over 5.6km long.
In addition to power generation, the reservoir plays an important role in supplying irrigation water for over 1,600 hectares of downstream agricultural land and contributing to flood reduction for the Quang Tri plains. This is the first hydropower project in western Quang Tri, bringing great socio-economic value to the region.
