Rao Quan Hydropower Reservoir: Preserving Peaceful Shades Amidst the Great Wilderness

Rao Quan Hydropower Reservoir is located on the Rao Quan River – an upstream tributary of the Thach Han River, in Huong Linh Commune, Huong Hoa District, Quang Tri Province. The Quang Tri Water Resource - Hydropower Project commenced construction in August 2003 and was officially put into operation in July 2009.

• Capacity: 64 MW (2 units), average annual power generation of about 217-220 million kWh.
• Reservoir capacity: Approximately 163 million m³ (some sources record 141 million m³ for total capacity).
• Lake surface area: 8.61 million m².
• Normal water level: About 480m above sea level.
• Characteristics: Main dam is 75m high and 540m long; the water conveyance tunnel is over 5.6km long.

In addition to power generation, the reservoir plays an important role in supplying irrigation water for over 1,600 hectares of downstream agricultural land and contributing to flood reduction for the Quang Tri plains. This is the first hydropower project in western Quang Tri, bringing great socio-economic value to the region.

Especially from November to December, the gum forest turns bright red and yellow, casting reflections on the quiet lake surface to create a poetic scene described as a “Little Japan” in Central Vietnam – an ideal destination for photo enthusiasts and trekkers.

One of Rao Quan's iconic sights is the “Lonely Tree” standing quietly in the middle of the lake, which has become a striking check-in point attracting many visitors. Situated at an altitude of over 400m above sea level, this area enjoys a cool climate year-round, combined with early morning mist, mountain breezes, and rare peace. Best season: March to August (clear water, blue sky). The rainy season (September to November) brings a more majestic feel, but the roads are slippery. November to December is the red foliage season.

Note: Tourism services are still limited (few homestays and eateries), so prepare food, drinks, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, jackets, and trash bags to protect the environment.

• From Dong Ha (Quang Tri): Drive along Highway 9 for about 70-80km west to Khe Sanh Town (Huong Hoa District). Then turn onto the Western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway for about 10km more to reach the lake. Total distance ~80-90km.
• From Khe Sanh: Only about 10km away, very convenient for a day trip.
• From Dong Hoi (Quang Binh): Drive along the Western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway for about 160km, combining visits to multiple spots along the route.
• Means of transport: Motorbikes are the best choice for sightseeing (winding roads, mild inclines). Cars can travel here, but drive carefully on forest sections. You can rent a motorbike in Khe Sanh or join a tour from Dong Ha/Phong Nha.

Travel tips: The Western branch of the Ho Chi Minh Highway is scenic but has steep and winding sections. Check the weather before going, especially during the rainy season. Mobile signal is weak around the lake area, so download offline maps (Google Maps or Maps.me).
