1. What makes Phong Nha Botanical Garden special?

Phong Nha Botanical Garden is located at Km 9, 20 Quyet Thang Road, Phong Nha Commune, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh – only about 12km from Phong Nha tourist center. This is a miniature model of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park with more than 2,000 plant species, including many rare, endemic species listed in the Vietnam Red Data Book (green ironwood, Hopea pierrei, Erythrophleum fordii, century-old Hopea chinensis...).

The biggest highlight is light trekking combined with a rich multi-sensory experience:

  • Rich ecosystem: Observe primates (monkeys, lorises), peacocks (one of the most beautiful bird species in the world), wildfowl, salamanders, insects, and hundreds of species of orchids and aquatic plants.
  • Karst – forest – waterfall – stream landscape: A harmonious combination of limestone mountains, primary forests, crystal-clear lakes, and cascading white waterfalls.
  • Educational – conservation value: Specimen exhibition house, native plant nursery, and interpretive trails help visitors learn practical environmental knowledge while trekking.
  • Healing space: Fresh air, gurgling streams, cool forest breeze, ideal for forest bathing (shinrin-yoku) and taking cool check-in photos.

Compared to deep trekking in caves or other primary forests in Phong Nha, the Botanical Garden is suitable for all ages, from families with small children to beginners, yet still challenging enough to offer a sense of conquest.

2. Detailed trekking routes

Phong Nha Botanical Garden is open from 7:00 – 17:00 daily. Ticket prices in 2026 are around 80,000 VND/adult; children under 1m are free, and students may receive a 50% discount depending on the route and applicable policies. Tickets are sold directly at the counter, where visitors can receive a guide map to proactively choose a suitable route.

With two main routes, the trekking journey here can be adjusted according to each visitor's time, fitness level, and desired degree of exploration.

Short Route (1,500 – 2,500m, 120 minutes)

Starting from the Specimen Exhibition House, the route passes through the animal rehabilitation area, Vang Anh Lake, Peacock viewing spot, rare tree forest with a century-old Hopea chinensis, ancient banyan tree, and ends at Wind Waterfall (Thac Gio).

This is a suitable choice if you want to experience the forest in a moderate timeframe while still visiting many notable stops. Along the way are freshwater lakes, diverse flora, and a cool green forest setting. Reaching Wind Waterfall, water cascades down cliffs from a height of over 30m, creating an impressive scene amidst the forest.

Long Route (2,500 – 5,000m, 180 minutes)

If you want to delve deeper into the Phong Nha ecosystem, the long route extends the journey with an interpretive forest-crossing trail, Vong Canh Hill, Dan Cave, Fairy Waterfall (Thac Tien), along with many areas featuring characteristic flora. Some sections feature natural terrain, light rock climbing, and wading through small streams, making it suitable for visitors who want higher physical activity and more exploration time. In return, the route offers many natural scenic angles and closer experiences with the forest.

Both routes feature directional signs, rest stops, and stream bathing areas arranged along the journey. If you wish to learn more deeply about the ecosystem or choose a suitable route, you can consider hiring a local guide, with reference costs of around 200,000 VND/trip.

3. First-hand experiences trekking Phong Nha Botanical Garden

The trekking journey at Phong Nha Botanical Garden starts with a cool, fresh atmosphere right from the entrance, bringing an instant sense of relaxation. Passing the Specimen Exhibition House, visitors feel like stepping into a “living museum” in the midst of nature. Next is the animal rehabilitation area, where you can catch sight of monkeys and peacocks naturally appearing in a semi-wild environment. As you go deeper, the sound of gurgling streams leads the way to Vang Anh Lake.

The most impressive highlight is Wind Waterfall, where water cascades from a height of over 30 meters, creating a cool, misty veil. Many visitors choose to stop for a “waterfall bath”, enjoying the refreshing feeling after the journey. On the interpretive trail, you will clearly feel the transition of the ecosystem from hundred-year-old ancient trees to lower vegetation layers, mingled with the sounds of forest birds and the signature cool breeze.

The entire journey usually lasts about 2–3 hours, with relatively easy terrain so it doesn't put too much pressure on physical fitness. Many visitors consider this a “healing” experience that helps relieve stress and connect more deeply with nature. Especially in the early morning, when sunlight filters through the canopy creating mystical light rays, the scenery becomes incredibly ideal for photography. It is the harmonious combination of nature, experience, and emotion that makes trekking here one of the most must-try activities when visiting Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park.

5. Essential tips for a safe trek

A great trekking trail lies not only in its scenery but also in the preparation before stepping into the forest. With terrain containing slopes, stone steps, and streams, visitors should prepare adequately so that the journey at Phong Nha Botanical Garden goes smoothly.

  • Clothing & supplies: Prioritize trekking shoes or sports shoes with good grip; light long pants, sweat-absorbent shirt.

  • Safety notes: Follow guided routes, do not split from the group or leave the trail on your own. Some sections feature natural terrain, so watch your step carefully while moving.

  • Preserve the ecosystem: The Botanical Garden is located within the natural space of Phong Nha – Ke Bang, so visitors must not litter, pick plants, break branches, feed animals, or smoke in the forest area.

  • Physical fitness: The trekking routes are relatively suitable for people with basic fitness. If you are not used to forest walking, prioritize the short route and take rest breaks at stopovers instead of trying to complete the long trail.

  • Others: Bring personal ID. If traveling independently, rent a motorbike from Phong Nha center (around 150,000 VND/day).
