1. What is special inside Paradise Cave?

Right from stepping into Paradise Cave, visitors will be guided by a system of wooden walkways about 1 km long (standard tour area), 3.5 m wide, harmoniously designed with the landscape and ensuring safety throughout the journey of exploration. Each step opens up a majestic space where the cave ceiling reaches a height of 60–80 m, with the widest point up to 150 m, giving the feeling of entering a giant palace created by nature over millions of years.

Inside the cave, the temperature is always maintained at a stable 18–22°C along with high humidity and naturally circulating cool breezes, creating a fresh and pleasant atmosphere year-round. The sharp contrast between the heat outside and the cool space inside the cave further enhances the attraction of the exploration journey. In particular, natural light filtering through skylights, blending with the cleverly arranged lighting system, creates a magical light-and-shadow effect, highlighting the shimmering beauty of each stalactite formation.

2. What is unique about the ecosystem inside Paradise Cave?

The ecosystem of Paradise Cave is a classic example of the miraculous adaptation of organisms in a dark, humid, and light-deprived cave environment. Unlike completely dry caves, Paradise Cave features underground streams, high humidity, and its own microclimate, supporting diverse life.

Key factors maintaining the ecosystem:

  • Stable temperature of 18–22°C: Creates an ideal environment for microorganisms and animals.

  • High humidity: Helps preserve stalactites and provides water for living organisms.

  • Limited light: Encourages species to adapt to the dark.

  • Nutritional sources from bat guano and organic matter: Supports a closed food chain.

One of the most interesting discoveries is the white cave scorpion species named after the cave. With a characteristic milky white color due to a lack of pigment, this small scorpion possesses antennae three times longer than its body to sense the surrounding environment. Remarkably, they are completely harmless to humans. In addition, in the stream flowing through the cave, there is a mysterious school of fish resembling catfish, with two barbels in front. Strangely, this fish species has no eyes at all, yet they still thrive thanks to their ability to sense the environment through other senses. The weight of this fish species ranges from 0.5 to 1 kg, making scientists extremely curious about their adaptation mechanism.

Researchers also discovered an insect species resembling a small cricket with a body length of 1–1.5 cm, but with long antennae, rear pincers, and long legs. The body of this species features a color mix of light brown and white, helping them easily hide in the dark cave environment.

Although there is no sunlight at all, the ecosystem of Paradise Cave still supports the life of bat colonies and even the appearance of small sprouts rising from the soft, wet clay ground. In particular, the flora in the cave is no less miraculous. Bioluminescent moss carpets and glowing mushrooms create a magical scene. These species only appear in areas with extremely high humidity, forming lush green "oases" in the heart of the dark cave.

3. Stalactites and stalagmites

One of the highlights contributing to the charm of Paradise Cave is its vast system of stalactites (growing from the cave ceiling) and stalagmites (developing from the cave floor) with massive scale and diverse forms. These "masterpieces" were formed through the process of calcium carbonate-rich groundwater seeping through limestone layers, dripping, and continuously crystallizing over millions of years, creating rock formations of unique beauty.

Along the tour route, visitors will encounter many vividly shaped stalactites that spark a rich imagination. Right at the cave entrance are stalagmites likened to the statue of Avalokiteshvara or the image of a giant elephant. Continuing the journey, an impressive scene of terraced fields with small, clear pools appears, interspersed with the image of a traditional Central Highlands stilt house miraculously recreated by nature. In particular, Lotus Tower stands out with its towering posture and intricately stacked rock layers, reminiscent of a blooming lotus bud, a dry pine cone, or an ocean coral reef.

4. Lesser-known interesting facts about Paradise Cave

Few people know that behind the beauty likened to an "Underground Palace", Paradise Cave also holds many records and secrets that will surprise any visitor. Let's explore these interesting things below!

  • Longest dry cave in Asia: With a total length of about 31.4 km, Paradise Cave is one of the longest dry caves in Asia. The standard sightseeing route is about 1 km long, while the 7 km journey is reserved for specialized adventure tours.

  • Aged 350–400 million years: The cave was formed in the ancient limestone mass of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park, undergoing hundreds of millions of years of geological formation to create the majestic stalactite system seen today.

  • Ecosystem-friendly lighting system: Paradise Cave uses specialized LED lights to minimize impacts on the living environment of bats and insects, contributing to the preservation of the cave's natural ecosystem.

  • Unique acoustic effects: The vast space and natural structure of the cave create impressive sound reflection capabilities, bringing an exciting echoing sound experience to visitors.

  • Special scientific value: Paradise Cave is an important research location for karst geology, cave formation processes, and the adaptation of organisms in cave environments.

Not only a famous tourist destination, Paradise Cave is also likened to a "natural museum" preserving valuable geological, biological, and historical formation values of the Earth.

Thanks to these efforts, the Paradise Cave ecosystem is gradually recovering, with the bat population increasing by 15% and 2 new microorganism species discovered. Every visitor can become a conservation "ambassador" through small but meaningful actions when visiting this precious natural heritage. The Paradise Cave ecosystem not only contributes to the cave's magnificence but also stands as proof of the biodiversity of Phong Nha - Ke Bang.
