Why are Vinh Moc Tunnels considered a symbol of the will of Quang Tri people?

Vinh Moc Tunnels were constructed in the context of the Vietnam War, when the land of Vinh Linh, Quang Tri became a frontline area suffering intense bombardment by the US Air Force and artillery. The tunnels were designed in three levels, with a total length of 1,060.25m (excluding alcoves, apartments...), with a main axis of 870 meters long and an interwoven system of sub-branches creating a complete underground network. Inside the tunnels was a fully equipped living system including water wells, rice stores, Hoang Cam stoves, guard posts, infirmaries, operating rooms, a maternity ward, and a hall with a capacity of over 50 people. Along the tunnels were small alcoves dedicated to individual households (3 to 4 people), creating a self-contained yet complete and safe living space underground.

Most remarkably, 17 babies were born right inside these tunnels, a vivid testament to the intense vitality and persistent desire for survival of the Vinh Moc people, even during the fiercest days of the war.

Vinh Moc Tunnels are not only an architectural structure but also proof of the resilient will and indomitable spirit of the people of Quang Tri. Under a hail of bombs and bullets, they not only sought ways to survive but also fought to protect their homeland and support the frontlines.

• The spirit of "sticking to the land, holding the village": Even though Vinh Moc village was flattened by US bombs in 1965, the locals were determined not to leave their homeland. They turned the underground into a solid fortress, maintaining life and fighting right on their own land.
• Sacrifice and solidarity: Throughout nearly 2,000 days and nights (1965-1972), not a single resident of Vinh Moc was injured while living in the tunnels, thanks to the sturdy design and close cooperation between the military and civilians.
• Supporting the frontlines: The tunnels served not only as a shelter but also as a logistical base, weapons and food supply depot, and emergency aid station for wounded soldiers, making significant contributions to the victory of the resistance war against the US.
