The Dai Hong Chung at Bai Dinh Temple is a record-breaking masterpiece, demonstrating the talent and dedication of Vietnamese artisans. Dai Hong Chung was cast and installed within the construction framework of the new temple complex, becoming an important part of the Bell Tower – a 3-story structure with 24 curved roofs and 24 decorative eaves. In 2007, this bell was recognized by the Vietnam Records Book Center as the "Largest Dai Hong Chung in Vietnam". Some sources also note it as the largest bronze bell in Southeast Asia, showcasing the excellence of Vietnamese bronze casting techniques.

Dai Hong Chung was selected by the Vietnam Book of Records as the largest bronze bell in Vietnam today. The bell is crafted from pure red bronze combined with a perfect alloy ratio to ensure durability, oxidation resistance, and create a resonant, warm, and distinctive sound.

In particular, the bell is suspended inside the majestic Bell Tower, an octagonal architectural work with 3 tiers of curved roofs standing over 18m high, shaped like a lotus blossom. At the top of the bell tower is a massive chain used to hang the bell, and alongside it is a 500kg ironwood striker used to strike the bell.

The design of Dai Hong Chung goes beyond mere size to artistic refinement. The bell's surface is engraved with Bodhi leaf patterns, cranes, water waves, and Buddhist artistic motifs. Notably, the entire Heart Sutra is carved in Chinese characters, carrying educational significance and reminding of Buddhist wisdom. The sound of the bell echoes for dozens of kilometers, especially clear on good weather days, evoking a sense of tranquility and awakening the soul.

Casting the Dai Hong Chung was a feat of Vietnamese bronze casting, executed by artisan Nguyen Van Sinh (72 years old, from Duc Ward, Hue). He is a 12th-generation descendant of a bronze casting lineage with nearly 500 years of history, originating from Cau Nom village (Bac Ninh) and migrating to Hue following the Nguyen Lords. This family line previously cast the Nine Dynastic Urns, the Nine Holy Cannons, and the Dai Hong Chung of Thien Mu Pagoda.

The casting process began about 2 years prior to completion (around 2005-2006), ordered by businessman Nguyen Xuan Truong – developer of the new Bai Dinh Temple. Many foundries refused due to the gigantic size requirements, but Mr. Sinh accepted the "gamble" with his capital and ancestral secrets.

• Preparation and mold making: Took 5 months with 3,000 worker-days, using completely traditional manual methods.
• Material: Over 44 tons of domestic red copper, divided into 12 melting pots at 1,400°C, using 12 D8 engines to generate wind and heat.
• Bronze pouring: Used a 20-ton crane to pour bronze into the mold, supported by 100 skilled craftsmen.
• Completion: After casting, the bell was transported from Hue to Ninh Binh by truck.

Despite a loss of 500 million VND (with a total investment of over 8 billion VND), Mr. Sinh considered this a national cultural heritage, proud that no Southeast Asian country had ever cast such a large bell. The secret to the sound quality was the most critical factor he passed down to his son, Nguyen Truong Son, helping the bell's chime echo with pure clarity.

In Buddhism, Dai Hong Chung (or bronze bell) is a sacred ritual instrument that not only marks the hours for chanting and worship but also holds deep significance: purifying the soul, dispelling afflictions, and saving all living beings. It is typically struck 108 times, symbolizing the elimination of 108 basic worldly afflictions (88 delusions of view, 10 delusions of thought, 10 hindrances), guiding people toward enlightenment and virtue.

• Resonance range: On days with good weather, the deep, powerful sound of the Dai Hong Chung can echo up to 10km away, allowing local residents to hear it clearly.
• Yin-Yang Harmony: The unique feature is that the bell is suspended above a large bronze drum weighing 70 tons placed underneath, modeled after Dong Son bronze drums.

At Bai Dinh Temple, Dai Hong Chung is also associated with the belief of worshiping Saint Nguyen Minh Kong – the founding patriarch of bronze casting and the guardian deities of Hoa Lu. The bell's chime is not just a sound, but a reminder of national history and the convergence of "a land giving birth to Kings, Saints, and Deities". During the Bai Dinh Temple Festival (from the 1st day to the end of the 3rd lunar month), the bell rings out during palanquin processions and ritual sacrifices, recreating historical events such as Dinh Tien Hoang offering sacrifices to Heaven or Quang Trung's flag-consecration ceremony, carrying profound educational and cultural value.
