The Pearl Well has a history of about 1,000 years, closely linked to the establishment of the ancient Bai Dinh Pagoda. According to historical documents and local folklore, the well was originally a natural water source at the foot of Dinh Mountain, Gia Sinh Commune, Gia Vien District, Ninh Binh Province. Zen Master Nguyen Minh Khong – a famous high monk of the Ly Dynasty and founder of Bai Dinh Pagoda – discovered this well thanks to a divine dream vision. He used the well water to brew herbal medicines to cure villagers and even King Ly Than Tong, contributing to spreading the pagoda's renown.

Today, the Pearl Well has been renovated and refurbished on a grand scale:

• Shape: Crescent shape.
• Dimensions: Nearly 30m in diameter, about 6m in depth.
• Construction: The well mouth is surrounded by Dinh mountain stone.
• Grounds: Square-shaped, spanning an area of up to 6,000m², featuring 4 octagonal pavilions at the four corners. The surrounding landscape is covered with lush green trees.

The Pearl Well is not only a water source but also a sacred symbol in Vietnamese Buddhist culture. The well water is used annually for ritual offerings at the pagoda, cleaning Buddha statues, and spiritual artifacts. Many visitors believe that drinking the well water brings abundant health, peace, and good luck. Especially during the Bai Dinh Pagoda Festival (from the 1st to the 3rd lunar month), thousands of people flock here to ask for water to bring home, considering it a blessing ritual.

With a diameter of 30m and a depth of 6m, the Pearl Well officially holds the record for "Vietnam's largest water well" since 2007. What makes it special is that despite surviving for centuries, the well has never run dry, even during severe drought years. Scientists explain that the water comes from an abundant underground spring system beneath Dinh Mountain, but for locals, this is a miracle from the gods.

This record is not only based on the well's impressive size but also its miraculous property: the water remains emerald clear, fresh, and never runs out all year round. Even during the construction of the new Bai Dinh Pagoda complex – a monumental project holding several Asian records—hundreds of workers used the well water for daily life and construction, yet as much water as was drawn, the well immediately replenished itself. Every year, water from the Pearl Well is still used by the pagoda for ritual offerings, reflecting the reverence and sacred value of this water source.

Visitors can visit Bai Dinh – Trang An at any time of the year, but the ideal time for worship and requesting water from the Pearl Well is:

• Festival Season (1st to 3rd Lunar Month): This is springtime with cool and pleasant weather, very suitable for spring travel and praying to the Buddha. Thousands of people gather here to visit and ask for sacred well water to pray for peace and luck.
• Ripe Rice Season (May to June Solar Calendar): During this time, the landscape of Ninh Binh glows with the golden colors of ripe rice fields, creating a beautiful and romantic natural scenery, perfect for sightseeing and photography.

Whether visiting during the early spring festival season or the golden rice harvest in May and June, the Pearl Well of Bai Dinh is always ready to welcome visitors with its sacred beauty and picturesque scenery all year round.

The Pearl Well is located within the Bai Dinh Pagoda complex. To reach this area, visitors can choose to travel by motorbike or taxi from Ninh Binh city center:

• Option 1: Follow the road into the Dinh Le relic area - Turn right at the end of the road - Go straight to the end of the dike - Turn left - Arrive at Bai Dinh Pagoda.
• Option 2: From Ky Lan Mountain - Follow Trang An Road towards Trang An Ecotourism Complex and Hoa Lu Ancient Capital - Arrive at Bai Dinh Pagoda.
