Quang Tri Ancient Citadel was built during the Nguyen Dynasty, started in 1809 under the reign of Gia Long (initially built with soil) and completed in 1837 under the reign of Minh Mang with solid fired bricks. The citadel is square-shaped in the Vauban architectural style (a European military fortification style), covering an area of about 18-25 hectares, with a perimeter of over 2,000m, walls about 4-4.3m high, 1.5m thick, surrounded by a wide moat.
Architectural highlights:
- Four main gates (Front, Back, Left, Right): Built with arched structures, thick ironwood doors, topped with curved-roof watchtowers covered with yin-yang tiles.
- Four bastions protruding at the corners of the citadel, combined with a rampart and defense road system.
- Citadel walls built of large fired bricks, bonded with lime, molasses, and additives for high durability.
After the war, the Ancient Citadel was restored, preserving sections of bullet-riddled walls as a vivid testimony to history. As you stroll through the citadel, you will clearly feel the yin-yang philosophy in its layout and the harmonious blend between traditional Vietnamese architecture and the modern military elements of that era. This is an ideal place to take souvenir photos and learn deeply about the history of Quang Tri province.
