1. Introduction to Tien Son Cave

Tien Son Cave is located in Phong Nha town, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province, within the administrative and service area of Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park. The cave is situated on a limestone mountainside, only about 200–1,000m away from the entrance of Phong Nha Cave (depending on the measurement method), at an altitude of about 200m above sea level and 120m above the Son River.

Unlike Phong Nha Cave, Tien Son Cave is a dry cave with no underground river flowing through it. The cave has a total surveyed length of nearly 980m, of which the first 400m have been invested with a pathway and lighting system to ensure safety for tourists. The deep inner section has rugged terrain with a depth of about 10m and a subterranean rock field extending nearly 500m, which is only suitable for professional expedition groups.

Standing from the cave entrance, visitors can take in a panoramic view of the peaceful natural landscape of the Phong Nha region with green rice fields, cornfields, sugarcane fields, and the winding Son River amidst the mountains. Inside the cave, the temperature is always maintained at 18–20°C, cool in summer and warm in winter, creating a pleasant and ideal space to explore at any time of the year.

2. History and formation of Tien Son Cave

Tien Son Cave was discovered in 1935 by local people and was first explored by a French female archaeologist, Ms. Colani. Initially, the cave was called the Dry Cave to distinguish it from Phong Nha Cave (a wet cave). However, thanks to its mysterious beauty, resembling a wonderland, it was renamed Tien Son Cave.

Geologically, the cave was formed tens of millions of years ago through water erosion through the Ke Bang limestone mountain range. The geological tectonic process has created a unique system of stalactites and stalagmites, with stone columns and stalactite formations of miraculous shapes. Although located right above Phong Nha Cave, the two caves are not connected, forming a “twin of nature” with distinct characteristics: one dry and one wet.

3. Geological features and natural beauty

Tien Son Cave impresses with a system of stalactites, stalagmites, and stone columns of unique shapes, formed over millions of years. Under artistic lighting, the inner space appears shimmering like a stone palace in the heart of the mountain. One of the unique features that makes Tien Son Cave so attractive is the natural "stone orchestra". Many stone slabs and stalactite columns in the cave have a special sound resonance; just a gentle tap will emit echoing sounds like gongs, drums, or bells, offering a rare auditory experience that not many caves possess.

To reach the cave entrance, visitors will conquer 583 steps winding around the mountainside. The path is shaded by an eco-canopy system with green climbing flower trellises, making the mountain climbing journey not only an exciting challenge but also an opportunity to immerse in nature and admire the poetic beauty of the Phong Nha - Ke Bang land.

In addition, the interior space of the cave is equipped with modern lighting, making it easy for visitors to admire the beauty of the stalactites. The sparkling stone veins under the light create the feeling of stepping into a fairy world, true to its name “paradise on earth”.

5. Visiting tips and key notes

For a complete trip, visitors should choose to visit during the dry season (April to August), when the weather is cool, without rain or floods, convenient for traveling and trekking. Avoid the rainy season (September to November) as it can cause difficulties for the journey, especially the path up to the cave.

Required clothing and personal items include

  • Comfortable clothes, non-slip sports shoes to climb 583 steps.
  • A light jacket and sunscreen if traveling in summer.
  • Drinking water, a hat or umbrella, and a camera to capture the moments.

Notes for visiting

  • Do not touch the stalactites to avoid damaging natural geological formations.
  • Follow the designated pathways, do not explore the deep abyss or subterranean rock field on your own as it is very dangerous.
  • Children and the elderly need assistance due to the terrain having many steps and being uneven.

Visitors often combine visiting Tien Son Cave with Phong Nha Cave on the same day to save time and money.

6. Cultural and conservation values

Tien Son Cave is not only a natural wonder but also associated with local legends, such as the story of a brave fisherman and a fairy, leading to the cave's formation as a heavenly palace. The cave is also part of the world's largest cave systems, with geological values researched by the British Cave Research Association (BCRA), contributing to the understanding of the regional geological history.

Currently, conservation efforts are carried out by limiting the number of visitors, installing eco-friendly lighting systems, and encouraging visitors not to touch the stalactites to protect the cave ecosystem. This is a prime example of the balance between tourism development and natural heritage conservation.
