Ngo Dong River, located within the Trang An Landscape Complex in Ninh Binh, is part of an intricate network of rivers weaving among ancient karst limestone mountains. Formed millions of years ago through geological weathering and erosion, the river created a unique landscape of caves, valleys, and winding waterways. According to geological studies, the Trang An area was an ancient sea around 250 million years ago, and Ngo Dong River is a remaining remnant of that ancient hydrological system.

Culturally, Ngo Dong River is closely tied to the history of Vietnam. It witnessed the Dinh and Early Le dynasties, with the ancient capital of Hoa Lu located nearby. In 2014, UNESCO recognized Trang An as the first Mixed Heritage Site in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, highlighting its geological, ecological, and cultural values. Ngo Dong River serves not only as the primary waterway for exploring Trang An but also as a symbol of harmony between nature and humanity.
